Lakers Break School Records, Set NCAA Qualifying Marks Over Weekend

Results

Grand Valley State hosted the Mike Lints Laker Challenge on Friday in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The meet featured Ferris State, Grand Valley, and Northwood. The Lakers also sent athletes to the University of Michigan for the Red Simmons Invitational on Saturday.

Sophomore Jennifer O'Shesky won the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.34, freshman Samantha Gordon took first in the mile (5:07.80), and freshman Jen Tulpa placed first in the 55 meter hurdles with a winning time of 8.81. Rachel Duthler recorded a mark of 11-06.00 in the pole vault for a first place finish.

On the men's side, freshman Josh Pahl won the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.73, while junior Joe LeFevre placed first in the long jump with a mark of 22-01.50. Senior Ian Morrison threw a 15.07m in the shot put for first place and sophomore Casey Fechter won the weight throw with a toss of 15.27m.

Both the men and women also had success at the Red Simmons Invitational. Don Wilkins broke a GVSU school record in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:22.14. In December Wilkins broke the school record in the 5,000 meter run in his debut as a Laker. Charles Smith recorded a throw of 56-06.50 in the weight throw, which was an NCAA Qualifying mark.

Krista O'Dell finished second in the mile with an NCAA Qualifying time of 4:54.84, while Mandi Zemba was right behind her in third place also with an NCAA Qualifying time (4:55.51). Jennifer O'Shesky took eighth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.98, which was also an NCAA Qualifying time. Morgan Acre set a GVSU school record as she took first place in the weight throw with a mark of 57-00.00. Katie Corner also broke a school record as she recorded a 44-07.00 in the shot put for a second place finish.

 

 

"This was a nice step forward for us in many spots", said head coach Jerry Baltes. "We had some individuals step up and gain some confidence. Our distance squads opened up and had some nice results."

The Lakers will compete in Kentucky and at Notre Dame next weekend.
