ALLENDALE, Mich. - The top-ranked Grand Valley State women's track and field team had a great all-around showing at the Mike Lints Alumni Open on Friday (Jan. 18) afternoon at the Kelly Family Sports Center.
The defending Division II National Champions added more names to the provisional indoor qualifying list on Friday, hitting 12 qualifying marks, including 10 provisional.
The trend of senior Sam Lockhart continued for another meet, as she collected two automatic qualifying marks in a pair of victories in the throws. Lockhart threw 16.08 meters (52'9.25") in the shot put and had a toss of 20.46 meters (67'1.5") in the weight throw, both victories, but neither of which were better than her current season-best marks.
A pair of pole vaulters hit provisional qualifying marks in a 1-2 finish for the Lakers, as sophomore Jacqueline Williams and junior Caley Faulkner both set season-best marks in the event. Williams won after clearing a height of 3.75 meters (12'3.5"), while Faulkner was the runner-up with a vault of 3.60 meters (11'9.75").
In addition to Lockhart's victory in the weight throw, another trio of Lakers hit provisional qualifying marks behind her. Junior Alyssa Zokoe threw 17.93 meters (58'10") for a runner-up finish, senior Jamie Smith was third with a toss of 17.64 meters (57'10.5") and freshman Laura Schroeder finished sixth with a provisional qualifying mark of 16.53 meters (54'2.75").
On the track, junior Kalena Franklin again had an impressive day, finishing first in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.57 seconds and finishing third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.06 seconds, both provisional qualifying marks.
A pair of GVSU student-athletes who made names for themselves during the cross country season put their name on the provisional qualifying list for the indoor track season in the 3,000 meter run. Freshman Jessica Janecke finished second in the event with a time of 9:48.20, while sophomore Hannah Osborn was fifth with a qualifying time of 9:58.70.
The 4x400 relay team of freshman Brittany Terry, sophomore Brittney Banister, junior Andrea Kober and Franklin upped their provisional qualifying mark in that event, winning in a season-best time of 3:47.13.
Banister also had a couple good showings individually, finishing third in the 60 meter dash (7.83) and fourth in the 200 meter dash (25.14). Terry had a runner-up finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 58.55 seconds.
Junior Alisha Weaver and sophomore Jordyn Kiser tied for the top spot in the high jump, both clearing a height of 1.64 meters (5'4.5") on their first attempt. Senior Jennifer Fuller (1.59m/5'2.5") was third, while sophomore Catherine Cieslinski (1.59m/5'2.5") was fourth after taking one more jump to clear the height than Fuller. Freshman Rachellen Sandbrook rounded out a group of five Lakers to finish within the top six with a height of 1.54 meters (5'0.5") to place sixth.
Sophomore Michaela Lewis was very flexible on Friday, earning three top five finishes in her events. Lewis finished second in the triple jump (10.99m/36'0.75"), fourth in the long jump (5.30m/17'4.75") and fifth in the 60 meter dash (7.88).
The Lakers will take part in their first scored meet of the season next Saturday (Jan. 26), when GVSU hosts Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Hillsdale for the GVSU Quad Meet. The event will begin at 1 p.m. inside the Kelly Family Sports Center.
