Grand Valley State had an excellent start to the new year as they hosted the Laker Early Bird meet on Friday night. On the women's side, sophomore April Szatkowski placed second in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.41, while freshman Katie Mandziara won the 400 meter dash with a winning time of 59.72. Sophomore Ashley Thomas tallied a first place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.29.
On the men's side Jimmie Freeman improved on his NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark in the 55 meter hurdles as he placed first with a score of 7.61. Junior Mike Simon recorded an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark in the weight throw with a throw of 55-05.50.
"This was a good meet to start of the new year with," said head coach Jerry Baltes. "We wanted to come out of the meet without any injuries and be ready for practice on Sunday."
The Lakers will host the GVSU Eubanks Open on Friday, Jan. 16 at 4:00 p.m. in the Fieldhouse Arena.
