Cory Young is set to begin his fifth year as the throws coach at Grand Valley State. During his tenure the Laker throwers have made an impact at the national level with 22 All-Americans. In a short four years, 15 school records have been broken on multiple occasions.

During the indoor 2010 campaign Liz Murphy set the school record in the weight throw and placed third at the NCAA Indoor National Championships, while Lauren Buresh broke the shot put record and placed seventh at the NCAA Indoor National Championships. On the men's side Donny Sitffler broke the school record and placed 10th in the shot put, while Matt Armstrong placed seventh at the NCAA Indoor National Championships and competed in the shot put as well.

During the 2010 outdoor campaign, the throwers continued to build on the terrific indoor season. The Laker throwers took nine throwers to the NCAA Outdoor National Championships with three of those student-athletes earning All-American accolades. Liz Murphy claimed runner-up in the women's hammer as a redshirt freshman, Sam Lockhart placed seventh in the women's discus as a true freshman, and Matt Armstrong was the runner-up in the men's shot put.

Before arriving at Grand Valley State, Young was formerly the throws coach at perennial national contender Western State College. In one year, Young had two female freshman throwers compete at Outdoor Nationals and his student-athletes broke numerous school records and rewrote the top-10 lists.

While at Western State, Young also managed and coordinated events at the schools conference center. Some of Young's other duties included creating and implementing workouts for the throwers, consulting with other events coaches with their workouts, and teaching weight training courses in the spring.

Young graduated from the University of Indianapolis in 2005 with a degree in Computer Information Systems. As an athlete, Young was a two-time All-American in the weight throw and was also a two-time outdoor national qualifier in the hammer and discus.
