Jason Van Elst is currently in his third season of working with GVSU's throwers. Van Elst was not only a five time All-American for the Lakers but also became the first Individual National Champion for Grand Valley Track and Field when he won the 35# weight throw in 2002. Graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Movement Science in 2002, Van Elst remained with the Lakers as a graduate assistant and then took over the role of head throws coach in 2003. In his first year at the head of this squad Van Elst coached two first time All-Americans and guided his throwers to six NCAA Championship qualifying marks. Just last year, the men's throwing crew averaged 21 points per event at the Indoor GLIAC Championship and 12 points per event at the Outdoor GLIAC Championship.

Jason also acts as the initial recruiting coordinator for the men's and women's track and field teams.
