BAY CITY, Mich. - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has announced the award winners for the women's tennis season and three Lakers make an appearance. Senior Lexi Rice and junior Kali Phillips were both named Second Team All-GLIAC, while senior Niki Shipman earned Honorable Mention All-GLIAC plaudits.
For Rice, it is her third All-GLIAC honor, as she was previously named honorable mention as both a freshman and junior. This season, Rice tallied a 6-5 singles record in GLIAC play and a 10-9 record overall at #1 and #2 singles. In doubles action, she paired with Carola Orna to go 6-7 in the conference and 13-10 overall at #1 and #2 doubles.
It is Phillips' first All-GLIAC selection, as she finished the season 8-5 in the GLIAC and 12-8 overall in singles, including a 4-1 record at #1 singles. In doubles, her and Leah Dancz combined to put up an impressive 12-1 record in the GLIAC and a 19-5 record overall, primarily at #2 doubles.
Shipman is now a four-time All-GLIAC selection after earning First Team All-GLIAC honors as a freshman and junior, with an honorable mention honor as a sophomore. Shipman had a perfect 12-0 singles record in the GLIAC, primarily at #3 singles action, then paired with Morgan Patterson at #3 doubles to go 8-2 in the conference and 15-3 overall. On the season, Shipman had a 20-2 record between both singles and doubles in GLIAC play and a 31-7 record overall.
The Lakers finished the fall season with a third-place finish at the 2013 GLIAC Women's Tennis Championship. The team will now prepare for the spring portion of their schedule, where they hope to pick up an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Tournament.
Northwood's Darina Berkova was named the GLIAC Women's Tennis Athlete of the Year. The First Team All-GLIAC honors went to Berkova, Izabella Ismailova (Saginaw Valley), Natalia Lebedeva (Michigan Tech), Sofya Logunova (Walsh), Malaika Bora Messi (Tiffin), Yahsha Moore (Wayne State), Caroline Nelhage (Tiffin), Zdenka Pozo (Ashland) and Kwang Suthijindawong (Michigan Tech).
In addition to Rice and Phillips, the other Second Team All-GLIAC members include Daria Bondereva (Walsh), Morgan Delp (Hillsdale), Sydney Delp (Hillsdale), Ana Jan (Ferris State), Anastasiia Kazub (Northwood), Valentina Mazzolla (Tiffin) and Nastya Puchkina (Northwood).
