Women's Tennis Heads to GLIAC Tournament as #2 Seed

East Lansing, Mich. - Grand Valley State will participate in the 2009 GLIAC Women's Tennis Championship this weekend in East Lansing, Mich. The Lakers enter the tournament with a 7-2 record and are the second-seeded team in the conference entering the weekend. GVSU will meet up with Lake Superior State on Saturday morning (Oct. 24) in a 10:00 a.m. match at the MSU Tennis Center & Michigan Athletic Club.

The GLIAC Women's Tennis Championship is an eight-team, three-round tournament that will be played on Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 24-25), beginning at 10:00 a.m. both days. The opening round of the tournament is listed below:

Match 1: #1 Northwood vs. #8 Findlay

Match 2: #4 Wayne State vs. #5 Ashland

Match 3: #2 Grand Valley State vs. #7 Lake Superior State

Match 4: #3 Michigan Tech vs. #6 Ferris State

If Grand Valley State defeats LSSU, it will face the winner of Match 4 (Michigan Tech vs. Ferris State) in the second round of the tournament, also played on Saturday. GVSU would face the loser of that same match if Lake Superior State is victorious. The final round will be played on Sunday with match-ups to be determined by the results of Saturday's competition.

For the Lakers, Chelsea Johnston is a perfect 7-0 in GLIAC play at #3 singles and 8-0 overall at that position. At #4 singles, Darylann Trout is 7-1 overall and in the league, while Jackie Shipman is 6-2 at #5 singles with a 5-2 conference tally. Rachel Rendina is 5-1 overall and in GLIAC play at #6 singles.

The doubles team of Johnston and Trout is 8-2 at #1 doubles, including 6-2 in league competition. Rendina and Shipman are 6-3 at #3 doubles, which features a 4-2 GLIAC mark. Katelyn Grashorn and Katelyn Schaffer are a perfect 3-0 at #2 doubles overall and in league play.
