Grand Valley State University's women's tennis head coach John Black has announced the signing of three-student athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2004 season. Jenna Killips, of Luddington, Mich., Emily Zellner, of Midland, Mich. and Arcelia Gomez, of San Luis Potosi, Mexico will be joining the women's tennis team starting this fall.
Gomez has been ranked in the top 30 nationally in Mexico and has extensive experience on the international circuit. She finished in eighth place in singles and ninth in doubles at the National Hard Courts Championships. At the National Clay Courts Championships she finished in eighth place in doubles.
Killips played #1 singles for Ludington High School. At Ludington she finished her career with a record of 84-21. During her senior season she was regional champion and selected first team all-conference and first team all-state. In addition, she has been ranked #1 in Northern Michigan and has a Midwest Ranking in USTA tournament play.
Zellner played singles for Midland Dow High School and this past season led her team to a top three state finish. She advanced to the semifinals at states, was selected first team all-state and has achieved both district and sectional rankings in USTA tournament Play. In addition, she has been a four-year Wightman Cup representative.
"I'm extremely excited about our incoming freshman," said Coach Black. "All three women have outstanding games and should challenge our top returning players."
