Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team was selected to play in the 2005 NCAA DII Women's Tennis Regionals it was announced Wednesday by the NCAA. The Lakers will square off against Southern Indiana at the FSU Raquet & Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Mich. on Thursday, May 5 at 9 a.m. The Championship match is slated for Friday, May 6 at 10 a.m. , GVSU is making its third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament under head coach John Black.
GVSU won a school-record 21 matches (21-7) this season, including an outstanding 11-2 record during the spring portion of the schedule. Senior Marie Cameron (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) is 11-16 at number one singles, while junior Allison Koopsen (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) is 22-4 at number two singles. Freshman Armella Gomez (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) has turned in a 16-11 record at number three singles, and freshman Jenna Killips (Ludington, Mich.) is 20-6 at number four singles. Fellow freshman Emily Zellner (Midland, Mich.) is 19-6 at the number five slot and senior Natalie Pallett is 17-6 at number six.
"The kids are excited to participate in the NCAA Regionals," said Black. "We played Southern Indiana earlier this season and came away with a tough 6-3 victory so we know that we will have to be ready to play from the opening serve."
