East Lansing, Mich. - Grand Valley State claimed a 5-4 decision over Wayne State Sunday morning in GLIAC Tournament action. GVSU finished third at the 2009 GLIAC Tournament with the victory over the Warriors.
Wayne State took an early 2-1 lead over the Lakers in doubles action. Wayne State's No. 1 doubles team of Sharon Gill and Milena Vuksanovic defeated GVSU's Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout by an 8-6 margin. The Warriors' No. 2 tandem of Kristina Goranskaya and McCall Monte defeated the Lakers' Katelyn Schaffer and Tara Hayes 8-3. However, the Lakers' No. 3 doubles team of Rachel Rendina and Jackie Shipman got the Lakers on the board by defeating Wayne State's Debora Correa and Jennifer Bradford by an 8-1 score.
The Lakers needed to win four of six singles mataches to pick up the team win. GVSU's Tara Hayes dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 1 singles to Sharon Gill, followed by a narrow loss by Katelyn Schaffer at No. 2 singles to Kristina Goranskaya (6-3, 6-3). GVSU's comeback bid started at No. 3 singles where Chelsea Johnston claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win over Milena Vuksanovic. Darylann Trout then claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, while Rachel Rendina evened the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jenniver Bradford at No. 6 singles.
The match came down to a battle between the Lakers' Jackie Shipman and Wayne State's Debora Correa. Shipman opened with a 6-2 in the first set, but Correa tied things up with a 7-6 (9-7) tie breaker win in the second set. Shipman closed out the victory for the Lakers by claiming a 7-5 win in the third and deciding set.
