Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State defeated Wayne State in the first round of the GLIAC Championships on Friday before falling to Ferris State in semifinal action at the Midland Tennis Center. GVSU, who entered the tournament with the third seed, earned a 5-4 victory over WSU to advance to the second round. The Lakers did not have enough to get past FSU who earned a 6-1 victory and a spot in the championship. GVSU will play Northwood in the third place match on Saturday at 9:30 am.
The Lakers won four of the six singles matches and one of the doubles matches to pull out the victory. Allison Koopsen and Kim VanSprange won at #3 doubles, and also earned wins at #3 and #6 singles, respectively. Nikki Fairchild won 6-1, 6-1 at #2 doubles, while Kellen Lynch won at #4 singles.
Koopsen and VanSprange remained hot and earned the lone victory for GVSU in the match against Ferris State in #3 doubles.
