East Lansing, Mich. - Grand Valley State will face Wayne State for third place at the 2009 GLIAC Tournament Sunday morning in East Lansing, Michigan. GVSU claimed a 5-0 over Lake Superior State in first-round action, but dropped a 5-4 decision to Michigan Tech in semifinal play Saturday at the Michigan Athletic Club.
GVSU claimed a 5-0 win over Lake Superior State in opening round play. The Lakers won all three doubles matches, then won at No. 1 and No. 3 singles to clinch the match. The GVSU-MTU match was close throughout. MTU's No. 1 doubles team of Nathalia Rondelli/Ploy Suthijindawong defeated GVSU's Chelsea Johnston/Darylann Trout by an 8-6 score and the Huskies' No. 2 tandem of Asel Otunchieva/Victoria Zhilkina claimed an 8-6 win over the Lakers' Tara Hayes/Katelyn Schaffer. Grand Valley State's No. 3 doubles team of Rachel Rendina/Jackie Shipman defeated MTU's Jacqueline Kukulski/Danielle Stoll 8-1. MTU won the top three singles matches, while GVSU claimed four through six.
