Grand Valley State claimed a crucial 6-3 GLIAC road win over Ashland Saturday afternoon. GVSU improved to 8-2 overall and 7-2 in GLIAC action and will next be in action at the GLIAC Tournament in Lansing Oct. 24 and 25.
The Lakers got off to a strong start by sweeping doubles action and taking a 3-0 lead. Darylann Trout and Chelsea Johnston won a tight match 9-7 at #1 doubles. At #2 doubles, Katelyn Schaffer and Katelyn Grashorn dominated to a score of 8-1. #3 doubles did much of the same as Jackie Shipman and Rachel Rendina won 8-1.
Grand Valley State split six singles matches with Ashland. Darylann Trout won comfortably at #3 singles by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Jackie Shipman pulled out a tough 3-setter at #4 singles, winning 2-6, 6-4, 10-4. Rachel Rendina made quick work of her opponent at #6 singles winning 6-3, 6-1. The Lakers fell at the top 2 spots as Katelyn Schaffer fell 6-2, 6-2 and Chelsea Johnston dropped a tough match by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 10-8. Katelyn Grashorn dropped her match at #5 singles 6-4, 6-2.
