BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team ended the regular season portion of its fall schedule with an 8-1 victory at rival Ferris State on Thursday (Oct. 17) afternoon.
The victory pushes the Lakers to 11-3 overall on the season with a 10-3 record in the GLIAC as the team prepares for the GLIAC Tournament next weekend.
The lone loss on the day came via default at #6 singles. The Lakers swept doubles, as the #1 team (Lexi Rice/Carola Orna) and the #2 team (Leah Dancz/Kali Phillips) both won 8-2. The team of Niki Shipman/Morgan Patterson picked up an 8-4 victory at #3 doubles.
Dancz/Phillips end the fall regular season with a 13-1 record in dual match play in doubles.
In singles play, Lexi Rice won her #1 singles match 6-3, 6-4, while Phillips won at #2 singles, 6-2, 6-2. The only match that went to three sets was at #3 singles, where Shipman picked up a 6-2, 1-6, 10-7 victory. Orna dominated at #4 singles without dropping a game, while Kelly Trapp won at #5 singles, 7-6, 6-1.
For Shipman (13-0) and Trapp (11-0), the victories give them undefeated records for the fall regular season in dual matches. Orna finishes with a 10-1 record in dual matches.
GVSU will now get ready for the GLIAC Tournament, being held in Midland, Mich., October 25th-27th.
