Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State defeated Mercyhurst 6-3 in GLIAC tennis action on Friday (Oct. 11) at the GVSU tennis courts. The Lakers improve to 8-2 on the season with all matches coming against GLIAC opponents. GVSU kept a firm grasp on third place in the conference standings as they entered the match with a one game advantage over Mercyhurst and Northwood. The Lakers already have clinched a berth in the GLIAC tournament and can cement the third seed with a win over Ashland on Saturday.
The Lakers swept the doubles action to take an early 3-0 lead. The two teams then split the singles action with Nikki Fairchild earning a 6-1, 6-0 win at number two, Kellen Lynch winning 6-4, 6-3 at number four and Kim VanSprange taking a 6-3, 6-1 decision in the sixth position.
Grand Valley will host Ashland on Saturday, October 12th, at 10:00 am on the GVSU tennis courts to finish regular season action.
