Four Lakers Advance to Semifinals at ITA Great Lakes Regional

Midland, Mich. - Grand Valley State placed two teams in the final four of doubles competition at the ITA Great Lakes Regional over the weekend (Sept. 19-21). The teams of Audrey Koopsen and Jaime Oppenlander, and Katelyn Schaffer and Jackie Shipman both came within one match of the finals before falling at Northwood University in Midland, Mich. Koopsen also advanced to the quarterfinals of singles competition at the tournament.

GVSU had three teams competing in doubles play at the regional tournament. Koopsen and Oppenlander were ranked No. 4 out of the 24 duos that entered the tournament, and so received a bye in the first round. In the second round, they defeated a team from Southern Indiana by a score of 8-3 and matched up against the No. 8 team of Paige Cooper and Victoria Goudy from Ashland. The Laker team won that match 8-3, as well, which sent them into the semifinals. There they matched up against Drury's No. 2 ranked Chandra Capozzi and Khrystsina Tryboi, and lost by a close 8-6 margin.

Schaffer and Shipman also defeated a Southern Indiana team in their first match, winning 8-1 in the first round. They then defeated two straight ranked teams to advance to the semifinals. In the second round, they downed Lake Superior State's No. 7 team of Ingrid Pflieger and Weronika Lamacka by a score of 8-2. In the third round, they faced off against the No. 3 team of Milena Vuksanovic and Sharon Gill from Wayne State. The Lakers' run continued, as they won that match by a 8-6 final, before losing to the No. 1 ranked team from Northwood in the semifinals.

Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout also competed in doubles play and won their first match 8-0 before dropping an 8-2 decision to the top doubles team.
 

 

All six Lakers also took part in the singles tournament, which consisted of 54 individual players. Koopsen, who was ranked No. 6 in the region, advanced all the way to the semifinals before losing. In the process, she defeated the No. 11 player in the region, Amy Ingle from Ferris State, before losing to No. 4 Gill. Chelsea Johnston, ranked No. 10, received a bye in the first round and then defeated her first opponent in straight sets before losing to No. 8 Tryboi.

Trout also advanced to the third round, winning convincingly in her first two matches by scores of 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1. Oppenlander and Schaffer both won their first matches before dropping out of competition, while Shipman dropped a hard-fought first match.
