The GVSU women's tennis team captured its first win of the season on Friday afternoon, defeating the Mercyhurst Lakers by a score of 8-1. Grand Valley State stands at 1-0 overall and in the GLIAC, as this was the first dual match of the season. Mercyhurst dropped its first match of the year and fall to 5-1 (2-1 in the GLIAC).
Grand Valley popped out to an early lead in doubles, sweeping Mercyhurst in all three doubles matchups. McCall Monte and Audrey Koopsen became acquainted with the No. 1 doubles slot by recording an 8-3 victory. Emily Zellner and Jenna Killips teamed up for an 8-5 victory in No. 2 doubles. In the third doubles position, a pair of freshmen, Darylann Trout and Chelsea Johnston were on the positive side of a 9-7 decision.
GVSU took five of six in singles play from Mercyhurst, with all five wins coming in straight sets. Jenna Killips held down the top singles slot with a 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Mercyhurst's Jennifer Daly. Freshman Jackie Shipman improved her record to 4-0 on the year with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Trout also blanked her opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Johnston, along with Katelyn Grashorn, recorded the remaining wins for GVSU. Junior Audrey Koopsen was downed in the No. 2 doubles slot, 7-5, 6-4.
