The Grand Valley State women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the Great Lakes Region Tournament with a 5-0 shutout of the Lakers of LSSU. The Lakers swept doubles competition and won the first two singles contests en route to the victory. The Lakers will take on host Drury at 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon in the second round.

GVSU got off to a solid start against Lake Superior State, sweeping doubles play. The team of Emily Zellner and Lindsay Grimmer earned an 8-4 victory in the top doubles slot over Celina Grondin and Lindsay Adams. McCall Monte and Audrey Koopsen took a tough, 9-8 (7-5) decision over Alexandra Chiakmakis and Megan LaMothe. Rounding out the doubles victories were Jenna Killips and Jaime Oppenlander, who defeated Megan Smith and Weronika Lomacka by an 8-6 count.

The Lakers needed just two singles matches to seal the victory, and they got help from their No. 5 and No. 6 singles players. Monte beat Chiakmakis in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Whitney Bindus also earned a victory, defeated Lindsay Adams by a 6-2, 6-3 margin.

GVSU continues its season and improves to 19-8 on the year. The Lakers have already notched a second place finish in the GLIAC and now look to upset top-seed Drury in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Match time is set for 1:00 pm. in Springfield, Mo.
