The GVSU women's tennis team wrapped up regular season play with a 7-2 win over Calvin College on Saturday in Kentwood, Mich. The Lakers improve their record to 26-5, and are currently holding onto the No. 3 slot in the region. GVSU finished second in the GLIAC in its fall season and will now await news on where they will play in the NCAA Tournament.
The Lakers took five out of six from Calvin in singles play, including a 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 come-from-behind win by Audrey Koopsen. Jenna Killips was victorious in the top singles slot, 6-2, 6-2, while Katelyn Grashorn earned a victory in No. 4 singles by a 6-2, 7-5 margin. Darylann Trout had no trouble in No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 7-5 win while Jaime Oppenlander rounded out the victories for GVSU in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 10-3. Chelsea Johnston was the lone Laker to fall in singles action, dropping a hard-fouth, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-10 decision to Elisabeth Geenen.
Grand Valley also suffered a loss in the top doubles position, as Killips and Emily Zellner were downed by Melissa Oosterhouse and Rachel Strikwerda by an 8-4 count. The Lakers rallied in the No. 2 and 3 positions however as Koopsen and Oppenlander held on for a 9-7 win and Trout and Johnston were victorious by an 8-4 margin.
