HOLLAND, Mich. - Grand Valley State halted a three-match losing streak with an 8-1 win against Hope College at the Dewitt Tennis Center on Tuesday. The No. 23 Lakers dropped only one doubles point to advance their record to 19-6.
In doubles competition, Maria Gassanova and Jaime Oppenlander won 8-1 in the top flight, followed by an 8-6 win at third doubles by Jackie Shipman and Katelyn Schaffer. The only point GVSU lost was at second doubles, in a close 9-7 loss.
The Lakers swept singles play, starting with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the top flight by Gassanova. Katelyn Schaffer won at the second spot 6-4, 6-1 and Chelsea Johnston played her way to a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at third singles. Darylann Trout defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-1 at the fourth spot, while Shipman earned a 7-5, 6-1 win in fifth singles. In the final flight, Oppenlander completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Grand Valley State is now 113-36 (.758) in singles play, including a 106-30 (.779) mark in dual matches and a 49-5 (.907) record in GLIAC singles. The Lakers have compiled a 61-23 (.726) mark in doubles play, as well.
