LOCKPORT, Ill. - The No. 38 Grand Valley State women's tennis team picked up a 6-3 win against No. 37 Lewis on Sunday night at Challenge Fitness in Lockport, Ill.
GVSU improved to 21-4 on the season, while the Flyers, who are just ahead of the Lakers in the national and regional rankings, even their record to 3-3. GVSU takes a week-long break before resuming play against Indiana (PA) and West Liberty on March 28 and 29 respectively. Both matches are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on the campus of Walsh University.
The Lakers picked up two doubles victories to start the evening. Niki Shipman and Morgan Carney paired up to defeat Jill Wetmore and Kendra Mills, 8-4 in the No. 3 spot. Leah Dancz and Allison Fecko followed suit to grab a 9-7 win in the No. 2 position.
Carney also won her singles match against Wetmore, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 4 slot. Kali Phillips defeated Brianna Markgraf, 6-2, 6-3, to make the match a 4-2 score. Freshman Claire Cooper then dropped Mills, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 6 position and put the match out of reach. Lexi Rice defeated Megan Nguyen, 6-2, 6-3, in the third spot to secure the victory.
Lewis picked up wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, but could not get another singles match as GVSU grabbed a regional victory.
