Laker Women Finish Second At GLIAC S&D Championships With 783.5 Points

Detroit, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's swimming and diving team finished second at the 2010 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships with 783.5 points. Wayne State claimed the GLIAC title with 901.5 points, followed by GVSU (783.5), Ashland (437), Indianapolis (401) and Findlay (333). GVSU, which claimed its first-ever GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championship a year ago, will now prepare for the NCAA DII National Championships to be held March 10-13 in Canton, Ohio.

The Lakers opened with a strong showing in the 1000 freestyle, led by sophomore Amy Akers' fourth-place finish in an NCAA DII "B" standard qualifying time of 10:36.66. Sophomore Erin Kinney also hit the "B" standard with her fifth-place finish (10:40.08), while Kelsey Reid finished sixth in a time of 10:49.12.

Freshman Kelsey Vermeer finished fourth and hit the NCAA "B" mark with her time of 52.61 in the 100 freestyle, followed closely by teammate Katelyn Childers in fifth (52.68) who also hit the "B" standard. Junior Kim Baughman hit the "B" mark in the consolation finals when she touched the wall in a time of 53.44 which was good for 10th. Allison Scholz finished 12th in a time of 54.09. Freshman Marissa Orr finished fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:08.95).

The Lakers turned in stellar showing in the 200 breaststroke with three in the finals. Toni Musto hit the NCAA "A" standard with her third-place finish in a time of 2:21.04, while Sam Stump hit the "B" qualifying mark with a fourth-place finish in a time of 2:23.74. Sophomore Lauren Dorsey also hit the NCAA "B" standard when she touched the wall in sixth (2:24.04). Sophomore Carly Bush notched a fifth-place finish in the 200 butterfly and hit the NCAA "B" mark with her time of 2:08.32, followed by freshman Marissa Doepker, who also hit the "B" mark, with her sixth-place finish (2:08.83). Freshman Kaci Swieter finished 11th the 200 fly (2:11.70) and junior Erin Lynch was 15th (2:13.65).

 

 

The Lakers' 400 free relay team of Marissa Orr, Kelsey Vermeer, Sam Stump and Katelyn Childers hit the NCAA "A" standard when they tied for second in a time of 3:30.70).
