Detroit, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's swimming and diving team made a strong push on Wayne State Thursday evening at the 2010 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships. The Lakers entered Thursdays finals 55 points behind Wayne State, however, GVSU outscored the Warriors by 41 points and pulled to within 14 points heading into Friday. Wayne State leads the way with 342 points, followed by GVSU (328), Ashland (195), Indianapolis (150) and Lewis (126). Friday's prelims will begin at 10:30 a.m., with the Friday finals set for 6:00 p.m.
GVSU scored 49 points in the 500 freestyle, led by Erin Kinney's fifth-place finish in a time of 5:08.84. Marissa Doepker improved her NCAA qualifying mark with her sixth-place finish (5:09.48), while Amy Akers finished eighth (5:16.32). Kelsey Reid finished 11th (5:13.70) and Erin Lynch 12th (5:15.53) in the 500 free. GVSU followed the 500 free by scoring 50 points in the 200 IM as all four that swam in the finals either improved or hit the NCAA qualifying standard. Toni Musto finished fifth with a time of 2:09.65, followed by Kaci Swieter in sixth (2:10.83), Sam Stump in seventh (2:10.85) and Lauren Dorsey (2:13.94) in eighth. Musto and Stump both improved their marks, while Swieter and Dorsey hit the "B" standard in the morning prelims. Kelsey Vermeer finished second in the 50 free (24.01), while Kim Baughman touched sixth (24.29). Jenna Faletti touched in 24.47 to finish 11th, followed by Katelyn Childers in 12th (24.58).

The Lakers' 200 free relay team of Kelsey Vermeer, Melissa Faletti, Allison Scholz and Kim Baughman touched third in an NCAA "A" standard time of 1:35.60. GVSU closed the night with a fourth-place finish in the 400 medley relay. Baughman, Dorsey, Bush and Vermeer touched the wall in 3:54.99.
