Detroit, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's swimming and diving team is in second place with 123 points after the first day of competition at the 2010 GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships on the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. Wayne State leads the way with 178 points, followed by GVSU (123), Ashland (53), Northern Michigan (48) and Lewis (39). Day two will begin with morning prelims at 10 a.m.
The opening event of the evening was the 1650 freestyle and the Lakers scored 52 team points. Sophomore Erin Kinney finished third and hit the NCAA B standard for the second time this season with her time of 17:51.18. Kelsey Reid finished fourth and hit the NCAA B mark with her time of 17:57.63, while Amy Akers also hit the "B" standard with her fifth-place finish (17:58.16). Carly Bush, who hit the "B" standard earlier this season, finished 10th with a time of 18:13.12. The Lakers' 200 medley relay team of Marissa Orr, Lauren Dorsey, Kelsey Vermeer and Kim Baughman finished second and hit the NCAA A standard with a time of 1:46.44. Karen Verbrugge finished third on the 3-meter board with an 11-dive score of 440.30. Rachel Strom finished fifth with a score of 408.00 and Jasmine Ramahi was 10th with 344.50 points.

Wayne State scored 62 points in the 1650 free, 76 points in diving and 40 points in the 200 medley. GVSU scored 52 points in the 1650 free, 37 points in diving and 34 points in the 200 medley relay.
