Allendale, Mich. - The No. 2-ranked Grand Valley State women's swimming & diving team won 12 events en route to a 162-70 victory over Northern Michigan Saturday (Jan. 30) at the GVSU Pool. GVSU improved to 7-2 overall on the year and will next be in action at the GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships Feb. 10-13 at Wayne State.

Sophomore diver Karen Verbrugge stole the show for the Lakers in the final dual meet of the season. Verbrugge broke both 1-meter and 3-meter diving pool records and school records. Her total of 284.05 on the 3-meter board broke the previous pool and varsity mark of 283.42 held by Rachel Terpstra. Verbrugge then tallied a six-dive total of 278.05 on the 1-meter board, bettering the pool record held by Erin Maloney of Albion and the varsity record of 275.78 by Verbrugge.

Grand Valley State opened with a 1-2-3 finish in the 400 medley relay. The Laker "A" team of Kelsey Vermeer, Laruen Dorsey, Carly Bush and Marissa Orr touched the wall in 4:12.13. Erin Kinney led a 1-2-3 finish in the 1000 free with her time of 10:45.81. Amy Akers finished second (11:06.52) and Toni Musto third (11:15.35). Marissa Doepker led another 1-2-3 finish in the 200 free. Doepker touched the wall in 1:59.24, followed by Carly Bush in second (2:02.83) and Melissa Faletti in third (2:03.95). Kim Baughman claimed top honors in the 50 free (24.86), while Allison Scholz touched second (24.88) and Katelyn Childers third (25.46).
 

 

Kaci Swieter touched first in the 200 IM (2:16.55), followed by Sam Stump (2:16.60) and Amy Myers (2:23.51). Katelyn Childers touched first in the 100 free (55.28), while Jenna Faletti was second (55.66) and Kelsey Vermeer third (55.75). Orr finished second in the 200 back (2:14.13), while Jordan Appleyard was third (2:14.27). Marissa Doepker finished first in the 500 free (5:24.07), Musto was first in the 200 breast (2:24.31) and the 400 free relay team of Orr, Doepker, Faletti and Vermeer claimed top honors (3:L39.94).
