Sept. 30, 2008
Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State softball team had a successful season on the field in 2008, finishing 27-16 and 12-8 in the GLIAC. However, the Lakers were even more proficient off the field and in the classroom, as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association honored the team on Monday (Sept. 29) with the second-best grade-point average in NCAA Division II. GVSU combined for a 3.575 GPA in the 2007-08 school year.
Only Grand Canyon University accumulated a better grade-point average than GVSU in Division II, with a 3.680 GPA. The Lakers finished second in Division II and their 3.575 grade-point average ranks second in all of NCAA (Division I, II, and III).
Head coach Doug Woods is very proud of his team and their academic accomplishments. "It is just a tremendous accomplishment of what our student-athletes did in the classroom," Woods explained. "They were very dedicated to their academic pursuits and we are extremely proud of them."
The NFCA announced the list as the Girls Got Game Top Ten All-Academic Teams, honoring high school and collegiate softball teams for their success in the classroom.
