Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State has earned the top seed in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional and will host the 2003 regional tournament this weekend at Laker Field. The tournament will be played on Thursday through Saturday (May 8-10), and will run into Sunday if an extra game is needed. Grand Valley received a first round bye and will play its first game against the winner of #4 West Virginia Wesleyan and #5 Northern Kentucky at 3:00 pm on Thursday. GVSU enters the post season with a record of 46-4.
The other side of the bracket is filled with two teams from the GLIAC and one from the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Wayne State earned the second seed and will also have a bye in the first round. WSU will play the winner of #3 University of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and #6 Ashland.
The Lakers' 46-4 record on the year marks the school's best winning percentage in history at .920. GVSU also set a single-season best with a 17-1 mark in GLIAC action. Last weekend, the Lakers wrapped up the conference title with a clean sweep through the GLIAC tournament.
The Lakers are the defending champion of the regional tournament as they went 4-0 last year in Edwardsville, Ill. to earn GVSU's first-ever trip to the National Championships, where they went 4-2 to place second in the country.
