Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State has earned the top seed in the GLIAC Championships which will be played this weekend (May 2-3) in Bay City, Mich. The double elimination tournament is being hosted by Saginaw Valley State. The Lakers earned a bye in the first round and will play their first game on Friday at 11:00 am against the winner of Northwood and Ferris State.
GVSU went 17-1, the school's best record ever in the conference regular season, to receive the top spot in the tournament. The Lakers are currently 42-4 on the year, ranked #1 in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Poll, and #6 in the NFCA Top 25 rankings.
The Lakers are in pursuit of their second GLIAC title in the last three seasons, after taking the regular season and tournament championships in 2001. GVSU has won nine GLIAC softball titles in the history of the program but only one since 1987.
