Bay City, Mich. - Grand Valley State officially captured the 2013 GLIAC regular season title on Sunday and senior Katie Martin picked up the final GLIAC Player of the Week award of the season on Monday afternoon (Apr. 29). The Lakers, 36-4 on the year and 24-2 in conference play, head to the GLIAC Tournament this weekend (May 3-5).
GVSU went 6-0 over the weekend with home doubleheader sweeps of Hillsdale, Findlay, and Lake Superior State. The Lakers outscored their opponents in the six games, 38-8, owning a .372 batting average and notching three shutouts to close the weekend.
Martin, earning her second GLIAC Player of the Week award this season, hit .500 (11-for-22) with a 1.182 slugging percentage in the six games. She tallied three doubles, four home runs, six runs, 13 RBI, and 26 total bases. The GLIAC all-time leader in doubles and home runs, Martin had at least one run and one RBI in five of the six games and recorded four multi-hit contests. She homered in three contests, including going 3-for-4 with two homers and five RBI in the 11-0 win over Findlay on Saturday.
At the end of the regular season, Martin is the GLIAC leader in doubles (17), home runs (16), and runs batted in (66), while her .456 batting average is second in the conference. She only trails teammate Nellie Kosola and her league-best .457 average. Martin's slugging percentage of .976 is far ahead of Northwood's Sam Zaborowski, who is second in the conference with a .679 mark.
Martin is the GVSU career leader in batting average (.436), hits (283), runs (178), doubles (67), home runs (55), and total bases (519). She ranks second in RBI (223) and walks (100).
The Lakers have had five players tally weekly honors this season. Emily Jones (Mar. 25), Martin (Apr. 1, Apr. 29), and Kayleigh Bertram (Apr. 15) have been GLIAC Players of the Week, while Hannah Santora (Mar. 12, Apr. 1) and Sara Andrasik (Apr. 15) have earned GLIAC Pitcher of the Week laurels.
