Bay City, Mich. - #17 Grand Valley State got off to a strong start in GLIAC play this weekend, going a perfect 4-0 in road games against Malone and Ashland. It was no surprise that the team's hottest hitter during that stretch was honored by the league office, as senior outfielder Emily Jones was named the GLIAC Player of the Week on Monday afternoon (Mar. 25).
Jones hit .533 over the weekend, going 8-for-15 and recording at least one double in all four games. Overall, six of her eight hits were doubles, but she also recorded 10 RBI, which was just three shy of Malone and Ashland combined in those contests. Jones had a .933 slugging percentage and a .588 on-base percentage during the weekend.
Against Malone on Saturday, she went 4-for-8 with three doubles and seven RBI, as five of those ribbies came in the 8-0 game one victory. Jones followed that by going 4-for-7 on Sunday as GVSU swept Ashland. She tallied three more doubles during the doubleheader and went 3-for-4 with a pair of two-baggers and three RBI in game one.
In 16 games this season, Jones is hitting .396 with 21 hits, eight doubles, and 26 RBI. She is the GLIAC leader in doubles and RBI, while her batting average is 10th best in the conference. After her six-double weekend, Jones is now tied for third in GVSU history with 38 career doubles. She is one home run away from the career top-10 in home runs at Grand Valley State.
The Lakers are scheduled to host three doubleheaders this week. GVSU is slated to face Wisconsin-Parkside on Wednesday (Mar. 27) at 3:00 p.m. in the team's 2013 home opener. On Friday (Mar. 29), Grand Valley State will welcome Walsh for a 3:30 p.m. twinbill before facing Lake Erie at 1:00 on Saturday (Mar. 30).
