Grand Valley State knocked off Saginaw Valley State, 4-3, on Friday afternoon in the GLIAC Tournament. The Lakers improve to 29-19 overall and will play the loser of the Gannon/Northwood game at 5:00 p.m. Friday.
Saginaw Valley jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Lakers came right back and added three runs of their own to tie the game at 3-3.
Freshman shortstop Nichole Woityra started off the inning by singled to the shortstop and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Sophomore right fielder Lisa Preuss tallied an infield hit to move Woityra to third base. Preuss then moved to second base on a passed ball. Sophomore second baseman Kristin Moleski walked to load the bases and senior third baseman Denise Ireton hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score the first run. Junior first baseman Crista Buresh singled to center field to score the second run of the inning. Moleski scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 3-3.
The Lakers scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the third as Moleski started off the inning with a single to center field. Ireton reached base on an error by the third baseman to move Moleski to second. Buresh singled to center field to score the winning run.
Sophomore Stephanie Cole (14-4) picked up the win, pitching all seven innings. She allowed six hits and three earned runs and struck out two.
Grand Valley outhit Saginaw Valley, 9-6. Woityra went 3-for-4 with one run scored, while Buresh was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Moleski tallied a hit and scored two runs.
