Grand Valley State dropped a 2-1 decision to Ashland University in its first game of the GLIAC Tournament. GVSU falls to 28-19 overall, while Ashland improves to 34-19. The Lakers will take on Saginaw Valley State at 1:00 p.m. in the elimination game.
The game was scoreles through five innings until in the top of the sixth inning sophomore right fielder Lisa Preuss hit home run to left field to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. However, in the bottom of the seventh inning Ashland scored two runs to pick up the 2-1 victory. The first run scored as the runner plowed over catcher Megan Smith and was called safe at the plate. The game-winning run scored on a wild pitch one batter later.
Grand Valley tallied four hits in the game, while Ashland had three. Freshman Lori Anjelich (12-10) suffered the loss, pitching 6.1 innings. She allowed three hits, three walks, and two runs, while striking out two.
Preuss was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI, while sophomore designated player Elizabeth Smith went 2-for-3.
