Grand Valley State hit five home runs on Thursday to tallied two wins over Olivet College. The Lakers won game one, 4-3 and game two, 7-3. GVSU is now 10-14 overall and will host Ferris State in a GLIAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 9 at 1:00 p.m.
Olivet scored two runs in game one to go ahead 2-0 after five innings. Grand Valley came back however, and added three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Junior third baseman Denise Ireton led off the sixth with a home run to left field. Freshman designated hitter Elizabeth Smith walked and scored as senior short stop Sarah Paape singled to left field. Paape scored on a single by junior Stacie DelChiaro to add the third run of the inning.
Ireton added her second home run in the game in the top of the seventh to score the game-winning run. Olivet added one run in the bottom of the seventh, but GVSU's lead was enough to seal the win.
Ireton was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while junior center fielder Tara Marsh was 2-for-4. The Lakers tallied eight hits.
Kristin Jenner (5-2) picked up the win for the Lakers, throwing all seven innings. She allowed nine hits, three runs, and three walks, while striking out eight.
Grand Valley jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game two after the fisrt inning. Ireton hit her third home run of the day to score all three runs. Olivet scored to runs in the bottom of the third inning. GVSU added one more in the fourth as did Olivet to make the score, 4-3. Grand Valley posted three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to seal the win.
