Grand Valley State fell, 4-3, in a tough contest to Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Myers Sunday afternoon. The Lakers drop to 2-4 overall. GVSU will play a doubleheader against Presbyterian College on Monday. Game one is slated to begin at 4:00 p.m. with game two to follow at 6:00 p.m.
GVSU struck first as they tallied three runs in the top of the first inning. Junior CF Tara Marsh led off the game with a bunt for a single and advanced to second base as senior SS Sarah Paape singled to center field with one out. With two outs, freshman DH Sarah Holland reached base on an error by the pitcher, creating a bases loaded situation for junior 3B Denise Ireton. Ireton singled to third base, scoring the Lakers first run. Junior LF Shelby Brayton knocked in GVSU's other two runs as she reached first base on the pitcher's second error of the inning.
The Lakers kept the 3-0 lead until the Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, cutting the score to 3-2. Grand Valley held the 3-2 lead going in to the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out and the bases loaded, freshman pitcher Stephanie Cole struck out first baseman Kate Fishburn for the second out of the inning. However, left fielder Jessica Rouse recorded the game-winning hit, with a single two knock in two runs.
Marsh was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Paape went 2-for-3 in the game with a run scored. Brayton tallied one hit and two RBI and sophomore Crista Buresh and Ireton each added a hit for the Lakers.

Junior Kristin Jenner pitched the first five innings, allowing five hits, two runs, one earned run, and two walks, while recording two strikeouts. Cole came in and allowed two hits and two runs, while striking out three batters.
