Grand Valley State started the 2005 season with a 5-1 victory over Eckerd College on Friday afternoon in Ft. Myers, Fla. The Lakers (1-0) will play LeMoyne at 5:00 p.m.

GVSU started off the second inning with a double by freshman DH Elizabeth Smith and she advanced to third as junior LF Shelby Brayton reached base on a throwing error by the catcher. The Lakers first run was scored on a wild pitch.

Grand Valley added its second run in the fourth inning. Junior catcher Megan Smith doubled to left center with two outs and advanced to third base as junior LF Miranda Titler reached first base on a fielding error by the first baseman. Junior CF Tara Marsh tallied an RBI as she knocked in Smith on a single.

The Lakers tallied three more runs in the sixth inning as Megan Smith started off the inning with a lead off walk. Freshman Sarah Holland reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second as Marsh recorded another single. Freshman 2B Kristin Moleski knocked in the first run as she tallied a double to left center. Sophomore 1B Crista Buresh singled to center field and two more runs scored.

Junior Kristin Jenner recorded the win, pitching all seven innings, allowing just two hits and one run. She recorded 13 strikeouts and just one walk.

Marsh was perfect in the game, going 5-for-5 with all five hits coming as singles. Moleski was 3-for-4 with a run and a RBI.
