#11 GVSU Heads to Northern Kentucky For NCAA Tournament

Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State Women's Soccer team was selected as the #2-seed in the Great Lakes Region and will take on #3-seed SIU-Edwardsville at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11. Northern Kentucky will be the host school and holds the #1-seed in the region, they will take on Wheeling Jesuit at 5 p.m.

The Lakers posted a 17-2 regular season record and won their first-ever GLIAC championship with a 7-1 record. The selection marks the third consecutive year that GVSU has been in the NCAA tournament.

Grand Valley faced SIU-Edwardsville earlier in the year at home, winning the match 4-0. Senior Mirela Tutundzic tallied two goals and an assist in the victory. Freshman Katy Tafler scored a goal and an assist in the match as well.

Grand Valley has outscored its opponents 72-10 on the season, with a winning margin of more than three goals per contest. Freshman Katy Tafler set the GVSU single-season record with 24 goals scored and leads the squad with 56 points. Senior Mirela Tutundzic moved into 19th in NCAA Division II annals with 182 total points in her four-year career.

The Lakers are 1-2 in postseason play during Dave DiIanni's tenure beating Wisconsin-Parkside 4-0 before falling to Northern Kentucky 4-3 in 2003. GVSU fell to host Wisconsin-Parkside 1-0 in the 2004 NCAA tournament.

First round matchups will take place Friday, Nov. 11 with the second round following on Sunday, Nov. 13 at noon. The winner of the Great Lakes Region will travel to the Central Region winner on either Saturday, Nov. 19 or Sunday, Nov. 20.
