Junior forward Irie Dennis has earned the first GVSU Student-Athlete of the Week Award for her performances in the first two soccer matches of the 2008 season. The award will be posted every Monday and will reflect on a student-athlete who has excelled for GVSU in the previous week.

The Lakers started off the season on August 29 with one the biggest regular season matches in the program's history against #1 Tampa. Dennis scored her first goal of the season against Tampa in the 27th minute. Her goal would prove to be the difference in the contest with the Lakers winning 1-0. In the second game of the weekend, Dennis opened the scoring just 1:26 into the match versus Southern Indiana. Irie would also add two more points to her total by assisting Ashley Elsass and Katy Tafler on their first goals of the season.
