Grand Valley State's best season in school history came to an end Sunday as they fell, 4-3 to Northern Kentucky in the Great Lakes Regional Championship game. GVSU ends their season with a 17-2-2 record and Northern Kentucky (17-4-3) advances to the NCAA DII Quarterfinals.
Northern Kentucky's Kendra Zinser scored the first two goals of the game to give the Norse Women a 2-0 lead. Rachel Bondy cut the lead down to 2-1 as she connected on a penalty kick with under five minutes remaining in the half.
Zinser added another Norse goal to put Northern Kentucky up 3-1 at the 47:25 mark. Freshman Shannon Carrier scored on an Erica Rose assist to cut the lead to one again. However, NKU came back and added a penalty kick to give them their fourth goal of the day. Carrier added another goal, her 12th on the season, at ths 66:53 mark, but the Norse held on to their 4-3 lead to seal the win.
The four goals is the most the Lakers have given up all season. GVSU had allowed two goals four times this year.
Melissa Henson tallied 10 saves for the Lakers and her 219 saves top the GVSU's career list.
