Allendale, Mich. - Gannon University mustered just one shot on goal as Grand Valley State University stymied their offense and allowed just one shot on goal. Katy Tafler scored three times, the first coming on a penalty kick, and the #1 Lakers advanced their record to 12-0 (4-0) on the season. Joyce Rose scored the second goal for GVSU and Kristina Nasturzio recorded the shutout.

The game started off slowly, with neither team finding much offensive rhythm. In the first half, Grand Valley State fired just three shots, while Gannon took just one. The only goal in the first half proved to be the game-winner. Tafler broke in alone on goal, but she was taken down from behind by a Golden Knight defender, and was awarded a penalty shot. Tafler buried it to the lower left-hand corner to give the Lakers the only goal they would need. The goal was her 23rd of the season and second penalty shot goal in as many games.

The Lakers had other chances in the first half, but could not convert. Ashley Elsass had an attempt on an open net early in the game, but the shot was blocked by the last Gannon defender.

GVSU opened up the game in the second half, taking 15 shots in the final 45 minutes. Gannon took one more, but did not put any shots on frame. Rose put the Lakers up 2-0 in the 67th minute when she took advantage of chaos in the 18-yard box to convert her second goal of the season. After the Lakers had a few shots blocked, the ball bounced to Rose who put it in the back of the net.

Tafler would finish the scoring with two goals in a span of 1:47. Her second goal of the match came at the 82:56 mark and her third was at the 84:43 mark. The goals gave Tafler 25 on the season, which leads Div. II. Tafler has won the GLIAC Women's Soccer Athlete of the Week award the past two weeks and is a strong candidate for a third consecutive honor with her seven goals over the games against #23 Mercyhurst and Gannon.

The Lakers are still ranked first in the NSCAA polls and will play their next match on Friday, Oct. 12 against Northwood in Allendale, Mich. Grand Valley has a record of 12-0 (4-0) and has won 23 straight home games. They have also won 12 straight matches dating back to their loss in the Div. II National Championship game last season.
