Erie, Pa. - The #4-ranked women's soccer team rebounded from a loss on Friday with a 5-0 road win Sunday against Gannon. Senior Shannon Carrier scored twice to give the Lakers their 10th win of the year. Grand Valley now improves to 10-1 overall and 3-1 in the GLIAC, while Gannon drops to 6-6 overall and 1-3 in GLIAC play. Grand Valley will return home next weekend to take on Findlay on Friday, Oct. 6 at 4 pm and Ashland on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 pm.
After being shutout for just the second time in their last 16 matches on Friday vs. Mercyhurst, the Lakers got on the scoreboard early when Shannon Carrier scored at the 10:53 mark to give GVSU a 1-0 lead. Freshman speedster Irie Dennis made it a 2-0 contest in the 27th minute when she scored her fifth goal of the season. Less than five minutes later, Meaghan Robinson scored her fourth goal of the year on a pass from Sue Christenson to make the score 3-0 heading into halftime.
Sophomore Katy Tafler scored her 21st goal of the season at the 57:12 mark when she drove home a shot following a Laker corner kick. Carrier added her second goal of the match and 11th of the year when she beat Gannon keeper, Tiffani Parks, 35 seconds after Tafler's goal.
Next, the Lakers will host a critical GLIAC weekend when they take on Findlay on Friday, Oct. 6 at 4 pm and Ashland on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 pm at Laker Soccer Field in Allendale.
