NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The No. 8 Grand Valley State women's soccer team used three-first half goals to shut out Walsh, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Milazzo Field.
GVSU improves to 9-0-2 on the year and more importantly remains unbeaten in conference action with a 5-0-1 mark. Walsh falls to 5-2-2 on the season and 2-2-2 in GLIAC play.
Junior Autumn Jacobs (Saline, Mich.) hit the game-winning goal just three minutes and 43 seconds into the game on a pass from sophomore Charlie Socia (Portage, Mich.). Socia connected with Jacobs when she turned and fired her shot from 20 yards out past Cavalier keeper Taylor Stano.
The Lakers tacked on two more goals in the opening stanza thanks to senior Maria Brown's (Columbus, Ohio) seventh goal of the season and Socia earning a goal of her own. Brown scored in the 31st minute on a pass from freshman Katie Klunder. Senior Alyssa Mira found Socia in a good spot for the third goal of the game at the 36:50 mark.
Grand Valley State once again held a commanding edge in shots, 28-5. The Lakers' 19 shots on target aided in the 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Stano picked up six saves in the loss, while splitting time in the net with Michaella Stucky who tallied 10 stops. Senior Chelsea Parise notched three saves in her eighth solo shut out of the season and ninth blank sheet of the year.
The Lakers have a short week with only a lone game against Ferris State on Saturday, October 6 in Big Rapids, Mich. at 12 p.m. GVSU was able to pull off a 1-0 win against the Bulldogs in a non-conference game in early September.
