Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State Women's Soccer team tallied five goals in the first half against Lewis (Ill.) en route to a 6-1 regional victory. Katy Tafler drilled in two goals and added an assist on the day. Ashley Elsass contributed with a goal and an assist of her own. The Lakers host fifth-ranked regional foe Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday (Sept. 18) at 1 PM.
The Lakers scored early and often Saturday afternoon, in a span of just 16 minutes Grand Valley scored four goals. Andi Redmond started off the scoring at te 15 minute mark on a shot in the box off of a Jenny Swalec shot. Elsass added her goal just four minutes later on passes from Erica Rose and Katy Tafler. Tafler added two goals of her own at the 24 and 31 minute marks. Megan McCarthy finished the scoring in the first half with a header that snuck past the Flyers' keeper to up the Laker lead to five.
The Lakers were held in check throughout the second half until Freshman Jamie Radley knocked in a header off a free kick at the 88 minute mark. The Flyers were able to get on the board with just 35 seconds left in the match as Allison Wilkerson scored on an indirect free kick in theside the Lakers penalty box.
