Rensselaer, Ind. - Katy Tafler scored twice and Irie Dennis added a goal and an assist to help Grand Valley State University defeat Saint Joseph's (Ind.) 5-2 on Wednesday night. The No. 1 Lakers (5-0-0) and goalie Kristina Nasturzio allowed the first goal of the season in the 31st minute, ending the senior's shutout streak at 375:40. GVSU's next match is at Ferris State on Sunday, Sept. 14.

The scoring started early, with the Lakers notching a goal just 1:40 into the match. Jenna Wenglinski took a free kick at midfield and put it into the 18-yard box. Meaghan Robinson put the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Tafler made it 2-0 just 2:16 later when she dribbled to the net and beat keeper Amanda Uram for her second goal of the season. Ashley Elsass converted a rebound into her third goal of the season in the 25th minute to give GVSU a 3-0 advantage.

Rachel Cobean kept Saint Joseph's in the match by scoring twice in the late stages of the first half. With 14:32 remaining in the first half, Cobean scored on a penalty kick. The goal was the first that the Lakers have allowed all season long. Cobean also scored on a breakaway just 13 seconds before halftime to make the score 3-2 heading into the break, despite the fact that the Lakers held a 13-2 advantage in shots.
 

 

Dennis gave GVSU some breathing room in the 55th minute with her team-leading fourth goal of the season. She added an assist in the 83rd minute on Tafler's thid goal of the season. The Lakers finished the match with a 25-3 advantage in shots, including an 18-3 edge in shots on goal.
