Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State opened its 2010 season with a 1-0 win over Winona State on Friday (Sept. 3) in Allendale, Mich. The Lakers improve on its unbeaten streak from the 2009 campaign to 59 regular season unbeaten games, dating back to the 2006 season. GVSU will host its second nonconference match on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 12:00 p.m. when they take on the Mavericks of Minnesota State-Mankato.

After a scoreless first half, Grand Valley State found the back of the net during the 65th minute. Sophomore Ashley Botts crossed the ball over from the right side of the field to junior Erin Mruz. Mruz scored her first goal of the season when she received Botts' pass and placed the ball in the right side of the net, giving the Lakers a 1-0 win.

Goalkeeper Chelsea Parise recorded three saves in the game and picked up her first shutout victory. Grand Valley State outshot the Warriors 18-6, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Lakers also took 10 corner kicks compared to Winona State's two.
