Melissa Henson is entering her fourth season as an assistant coach at Grand Valley State. Henson has spent her three years as an assistant helping with the goalkeepers. The Lakers allowed eight goals in 2006, the lowest in school history, followed by 10 last season. GVSU also broke the shutout record, recording 16 in 2006, which broke the record of 13, from 2005. Henson helped instruct goalkeeper Kristina Nasturzio, who holds the top two single season goals against averages in school history. In both 2005, her freshman season, and 2007, Henson helped Nasturzio post a 0.37 goals against average.
Henson posted a school-best 0.84 goals-against average in her four-year career as the GVSU goalkeeper from 2000-03. Her 0.39 goals against average in 2000 still holds as one of the top single season performances in GVSU history.
