Melissa Henson is entering her fifth season as an assistant coach at Grand Valley State. Henson has spent her four years as an assistant helping with the goalkeepers. The Lakers allowed eight goals in 2006, followed by 10 in 2007 and five the last season, the lowest in school history . GVSU also broke the shutout record, recording 19, which broke the record of 16, from 2006. GVSU is second in Divison II for most shutouts in a season at 19. Henson helped instruct former goalkeeper Kristina Nasturzio, who holds the top three single season goals against averages in school history. In both 2005, her freshman season, and 2007, Henson helped Nasturzio post a 0.37 goals against average. In 2008, her senior year, Nasturzio post a 0.23.
Henson posted a four-year 0.84 goals-against average in her career as the GVSU goalkeeper from 2000-03. Her .938 save percentage in 2000 still holds as the top single season performance in GVSU history.
