Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's golf team received its first-ever #1 national ranking, as was released in the latest Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association poll in the Nov. 30 issue of Golf World magazine. In the previous poll, GVSU was ranked #3, but moved up after a strong fall season in which the Lakers won four of the six tournaments in which they competed.
Polls were conducted by the NGCA and voting closed on Nov. 19. Grand Valley State received two of the 10 first-place votes and totaled 230 points, barely outdistancing second place Nova Southeastern, which had four first-place votes and 229 points. Florida Southern (223 points), Rollins (three first-place votes, 212 points), and Indianapolis (201 points) rounded out the top-five. GLIAC competitor Ashland received the other first-place vote and were ranked eighth with 161 points.
During the fall season, Grand Valley State won the Ferris State Invitational, the Laker Classic (hosted at The Meadows on GVSU's campus), the Bing Beall Classic, and the Zippy Invitational, several of which featured Division I competition. The Lakers will begin their spring season on March 10-11 in Mesa, Ariz. at the Ashland University Desert Invitational.
