Sept. 29, 2009

Grand Rapids, Mich. - Grand Valley State women's golf team took part in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday (Sept. 26) at Rivertown Crossings in Grand Rapids, Mich. All eight GVSU golfers and head coach Rebecca Mailloux participated in the race, which featured 166 teams and 5,895 total participants.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure focused on finding a cure for breast cancer. There were three different ways to race: a timed 5K run/walk, a non-time 5K run/walk, and a one-mile community walk. The Race for the Cure webpage tallied the total campaign donations and proceeds to be over $204,000. GVSU's women's golf team raised $325, making them the eighth largest donation in the category of schools, colleges, and universities.

On the Race for the Cure webpage was the following statement: "For more than 25 years, Komen for the Cure has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease, and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors. Over the next 25 years, an estimated 25 million women around the world will be diagnosed with breast cancer if we don't find a cure. Komen will not stop until we discover and deliver the cures. That's our promise."
