Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's golf team has been selected as one of 24 teams set to participate in the 2005 NCAA DII Women's Golf Championships it was announced by the NCAA. The Lakers will compete May 2-3 at The Meadows in Allendale, Mich. as one of six teams in the East Regional. The top two teams from the 54-hole East Regional will advance to the NCAA Championship May 11-14 in Alberquerque, New Mexico at The Championship Course at the University of New Mexico.
The Lakers enter action in the East Regional playing their best golf of the year during the spring portion of the schedule. Grand Valley State finished fourth at the Tusculum Invitational, first at the Northern Kentucky Invite and second at the Indiana Invite. The Lakers concluded the regular season with a first-place finish at the Tri-State Invite. Head coach Lori Stinson has a strong cast set to compete at the East Regional, led by 2003-04 All-American Melissa Sneller (Zeeland, Mich.). Sneller, a senior, has a 76.95 scoring average entering the NCAA Championships. Junior Enid Gage (Wyoming, Mich./Park) has turned in a solid spring with a 78.50 scoring average, while junior Kristi Vienneau (Bathurst, N.B., Canada) has a scoring average of 80.7.
Grand Valley State will compete at the 2005 GLIAC Golf Championships April 29 in Ashland, Ohio at the Ashland Country Club. The original 54-hole event slated for last Friday (April 22) and Saturday (April 23) was postponed due to weather and will now be a single-day, 36-hole championship.
