Rochester, Mich. - Grand Valley State placed second at the Golden Grizzly Invitational held at Katke-Cousins Golf Course in Rochester, Mich. The Lakers finished just one shot behind Division I Youngstown State with a two-round total of 671. While the Lakers finished second as a team, sophomore Shannon Briggs captured her first tournament title. Briggs, who was playing as an individual, shot a 36-hole total of 162.
GVSU entered the final rounds 11 strokes behind YSU, but shot the low round of the tournament (326) as a team. Kristi Vienneau tied for fourth with a 166, while Melissa Sneller was sixth with a 167. Nikki Augustine recorded her second straight top 10 finish with a solid seventh-place 168. Melissa Riegle was 13th (172), while Kate McDonald tied for 19th (176).
Briggs entered the final round two shots back of Oakland's Emily Minich, but shot an 80 to capture the first collegiate tournament title of her career. Ellie Saladin, also playing as an individual, finished with a 172.
The Grand Valley State women's team combined with the GVSU men's team to capture the overall tournament title. The women's second-place finish was scored with the men's third-place finish to record the low total of seven-team tournament. The Laker women and men totalled 1,597, while Oakland was second with 1,616.
