Fairlawn, Ohio - In a 15-team field that featured 11 Division I programs, Grand Valley State took home the team trophy at the Zippy Invitational in Fairlawn, Ohio on Tuesday (Oct. 6). The Lakers recorded a team score of 932 and placed three golfers in the top-10 and four in the top-15 during the 54-hole tournament.
GVSU used a 311 to hold a one stroke advantage after Monday's opening round. The second round of play was halted by darkness and the teams completed play on Tuesday. Grand Valley State followed its opening round with scores of 305 and 316 in the final two rounds. The Lakers finished three strokes ahead of Toledo (935) and well ahead of the host school, Akron (953), which placed third. Eastern Kentucky (963) and Ohio (974) rounded out the top five. In the 15-team field, the only other Division II schools were GVSU's competitors in the GLIAC, Ashland (eighth) and Ferris State (11th).
For the Lakers, senior Ashley Smith finished in third place after a strong showing, which included a stellar second round. Smith shot rounds of 77-73-80 for a 230 and was only four strokes back of tournament medalist Susannah Grunden (226) of Bowling Green State. She was also just one stroke behind Toledo's Erica Rivard (229) for second place.
Tying for seventh place were senior Caitlin Bennett and sophomore Sarah Hoffman. Both golfers recorded scores of 233. Bennett fired rounds of 77-75-81, while Hoffman used scores of 76-82-75 to compile her score.
Junior Allie Tyler notched a 237, placing her 13th. Tyler shot 81-76-80 to notch the fourth top-15 finish for GVSU. Freshman Ashley Beard placed in a tie for 36th, shooting 85-81-83 for a 249.
